YLANG YLANG CHANDELIER
Working with large sheets of copper; cutting, hammering and transforming them into shape to mimic the dramatic undulating silhouettes of the Ylang Ylang petals.
INSPIRATION
A commission piece for the front porch of a beautiful artist’s home in the Barbadian countryside.
Inspired by the client’s deep love for the Ylang Ylang tree, its free, flowing form, the overlapping petals, and the evocative shadows they cast, this piece draws on both memory and scent.
The tree’s fragrance, a favourite from her childhood, holds deep emotional resonance.

COLLABORATION
I worked closely with my client at the beginning, sketching ideas to refine the vision. Sourcing the light bulb was an essential next step along with crafting a custom fitting that connected seamlessly to the copper pipe.
My client provided repurposed copper guttering left over from her own home build and I used reclaimed steel and wood to create bespoke hammering stakes to suit the unique shaping requirements of the piece.
PROCESS
Each petal has been hand-cut and individually formed to create natural, varied shapes that overlap naturally, designed to suggest movement, as though they might curl or flutter in the wind.
The piece was completed with a thoughtfully designed ceiling cover that both conceals the attachment and allows for easy installation.
