SAFARI HOUSE

Inspired by my client's love of Africa and flair for the flamboyant, I chose two indigenous African birds as muses for these sculptural copper downspouts.

The graceful Grey Heron and the commanding Secretary Bird.

THE SECRETARY BIRD

The Secretary Bird, with her dramatic crown of feathers and expressive eyes, became a joy to bring to life in metal, her beak and bold features emerging first, followed by meticulously layered plumage.

Working with repurposed copper sheet from discarded guttering, guided the creative process with the birds being crafted in layers and sections to minimise waste.

THE GREY HERON

On the opposite side, the Grey Heron stands noble and watchful, his elongated beak a natural funnel guiding water to the gully below.

Both birds now sit in place, proudly overlooking the West Coast, their surfaces already beginning to take on a beautiful patina that will only deepen with time.

These pieces are more than just architectural features, they are characters in the story of Safari House, blending art, utility, and the wild romance of the landscape.
